Podcast and Documentary:   “The New Drug: What Every Parent Needs to Know about Porn” - 1000 Hours Outside, episode 452, March 28, 2025.

Hear from Parker Hymas of Fight the New Drug, a non-religious, non-legislative nonprofit that supports youth and adults in understanding the impact of online pornography.  If you still think of Playboy centerfolds when you hear the word “porn”, now is the time to understand the 360 degree turn this industry has made since our youth, and how our kids are seeing things we could never imagine existing when we were their age.

FTND also produced a three-part, teen-friendly documentary, Brain, Heart, World, back in 2019, to help youth understand porn’s impacts on the brain, the heart, and the world.  It’s a nice free resource to have in your pocket when discussing these topics with your kids.

Podcast: (RA) “It’s Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn” with Greta Eskridge  - 1000 Hours Outside, episode 444, March 12, 2025.

Powerful personal discussion with practical tips for parents when it comes to addressing pornography use in our families and with our children. Many of the perspectives overlap closely with Waldorf perspectives.

  • Debated sharing this resource due to mentions of faith sprinkled through the interview.  I do not personally share the faith background of either the host or interviewee, but believe it to be helpful information no matter a listener’s faith background.

  • The interview ends with a tearful disclosure by podcast host Ginny about her family’s reporting of inappropriate behavior by their youth pastor, and the backlash they experienced for doing so.   This pastor now has 9 felony counts against him.

  • If you are sensitive to the discussion of faith or abuse by religious leaders, give yourself permission to skip this one.

  • Otherwise, it provides real life examples that demonstrate how important these conversations with our kids are for their safety and lifelong development.
